RE: Front brakes
If ya gotta ask, you better have it done by someone that knows what they are doing. I really don't want to see you coming up behind me knowing you are driving 15,000 lbs. of runaway RV.
To answer your question, most shops will charge a couple of hours, to replace the pads, machine the brake rotors, clean and repack the wheel bearings, and replace the grease seals. Dollar wise, probably $ 200.00 or so.
RE: Black Streaks - Awesome?
I bought a product from Wally World, simply called "Black Streak Remover". It is in a simple 33 oz. spray bottle. I rinse off the MH spray this stuff on and the black streaks just go away. I very nearly can rinse off the effected area, and the streaks are gone, without scrubbing. Sure works well for me!
They're website on the lable is www.epabest.com

"Speaking of Macerators has anyone tried one of the portable ones. Flojet Model 1855-000DC at flojet.com".
Yep! Had one for a couple of years now. It's paid for itself many times over. I no longer need to sit in line, at a dump station, and no longer need to pay the exorbitant $$, some of the operators rip us off for. It really does pump about 30 gallons in 3 minutes, give or take a little, and it works best w/ a 7/8" industrial hose. Do a search here on the forum by typing "mascerator pump". There have been many threads about them.
Al/Reeni, have you considered a sediment filter, something like the fuel/water separator found on diesel trucks? You know, the ones w/ a glass sight bowl, so you can see how much junk is in them? Just a thought.
RE: Direct TV DVR
Works just fine, as long as it's powered up all the time. If you are boondocking, and expect it to record your daily preset programs, forget it, and if you only have 1 input cable, and it is recording an event, you will be required to watch what you are recording.
I prefer the smaller non DVR unit. It fits much better, and boots up a bit quicker.
RE: Solar Panel Charging
Probably best to check w/ the coach manufacturer. Some choose to wire the charger directly to the batteries, in which case you will likely see a red + & a neg - set of thin 16 ga. wires attached to the respective battery terminals. I have also seen the charge wires connected to the convertor, in which case when the coach disconnect switch is switched off, the batteries receive no charge at all. That, in my estimation, is the incorrect way to connect the system. Should you have the small wires connected directly to the batteries, you might consider testing the output with a voltmeter. Lot's of them aren't very reliable.
RE: Flojet Macerator Portable RV Waste Pump
I've had mine for a little over a year now, and it has done exactly as advertised. Initially though, I had only used it for, maybe 5-7 pumpings, and the next time, the motor was completely frozen up. I dug out the receipt, and wouldn't you know it, 13 month's and 3 weeks had elapsed. DA*#IT!! So I disassembled the thing, and the factory had omitted a seal on the motor's output shaft, allowing liquid to penetrate the motor assembly. Long story short, they sent me a new motor, and seal kit, @ no charge, and everything has been A'OK since then. It's a great product, and as tom cav mentioned, it'll pay for itself, (probably already has) in no time.
RE: Eastern Sierra Trout Opener Pics
I dont know why these are so big??
Go into your camera settings, and reset the pixel size to somewhere around 600 X 800. That's a good size for the forums.
RE: Hwy. 18 North from Big Bear Lake
It's pretty steep, w/ lot's of tight twisty turns. I would do it in an SUV & trailer, but a class A, not gonna happen,IMHO.
RE: Lets talk fuel economy and ways to improve.
Don't forget proper tire inflation, and alignment helps a bit also. I found that an engine vacuum gauge can tell you volumes, regarding just how hard the engine is working. The higher the vacuum, the easier the engine is working, and that equals xtra mileage.
RE: Outdoor World Retreat
Yep, Dimitri will not tolerate ATV's much, especially those w/ modified exhausts. Might as well leave em at home. We had to trailer a small 3 cylinder dune buggy last year, that had a Super Trapp exhaust. Just too loud in his estimation. Bikes and quads are a definate no-no. And partying past 11PM is frowned on as well. We got chewed out a couple of times last year.
RE: Barstow, CA to Pahrump, NV
127 is a very nice road. 1 lane in each direction, plenty of room to pass, but usually there isn't anyone on it to pass anyway. Be cautious if you need to pull over to the side of the road. The sand/gravel is very soft, and will swallow a rig in a heartbeat.
RE: 05 Dolphin or 01 Phaeton
The Tiffin is your best buy. Company is sound and has great service to owners. The larger pay load is a plus. Resale value is as important as purchase price and Tiffin is far ahead of a National coach. The quality and workmanship of the Phaeton far exceeds the Dolphin and will be still on the road long after the Dolphin. I would go with the Tiffin product way better coach.
Counterpoint;
IMHO, National was building a far better product than the purchase price would indicate. Ours is ROCK SOLID, has never stranded us, never been back for any coach related services.
I have 2 other friends that both purchased Tiffin products in '06. Both have been to the service facility for more time more than the owners have had them. Build quality issues over and over again, to the point, that the initial 1 year warranty is over, and the coaches are STILL at the service facility.
I'm in agreement, that the gasser chassis would likely be better suited to you're needs, and in reality, how much weight carrying capacity do you really need for local trips? I would be willing to be that if we emptied our rig and weighed it all, that we don't have 400 lbs. of stuff in it.
Find a rig you truly feel will suit your lifestyle, and your budget, and go for it, and don't let anybody tell you differently for your decisions.
RE: Macerator pump, Good, bad and the Messy
I, on the other hand, am sick to death of waiting in line at ANY dump station, and access to the sewer lines at home was/is not economically feasible. Thus the reason for the purchase. I bought the Shur-Flo @ CW a couple years ago. I raise the right side of the MH so everything moves to the waste gate side of the tank. I am able to take my time, not waste anyone else's time in line, and the flush king takes care of and solids build up. Sure works for me.
